Built for the portrait, not the loft.

Most photo studios in New York are loft conversions — one outlet, a folded-up paper roll in the corner, and a landlord who doesn't want you here past 6 PM. Portrait Studio is a real photo room, bookable by the hour.

Lit, ready.

Three Nanlite bi-color LEDs on stands (2× FS-300B + 1× FS-60B), a 36” softbox + grid, a convertible umbrella, fresnel lens, and 2 C-stands waiting on the floor. Most days you can be lit and shooting in 15 minutes.

Backdrops, swappable.

White hangs as standard — included with every booking. Grey, Green, or Black swap in for $30 (Black needs 24-hour notice). 107″ wide rolls on a wall-mounted Impact Varipole rig. No paper to load in.

Brooklyn light.

White-painted wood floor that bounces clean. Daylight through industrial windows on the south side, killable when you need the LEDs to read true. The room you'll wish your apartment had.

Portrait Studio

What gets shot here.

A working snapshot of the calendar — the kind of one-hour, half-day, and lookbook work the room handles best.

01 · Talent

Headshots

Founder, actor, agency, LinkedIn. One backdrop, one chair, one hour. White is the safe pick; Black reads dramatic.

02 · Brand

Brand portraits

Founder + product in one half-day. Swap White to Grey for the cover shot, hand off the same key + fill to your retoucher.

03 · E-com

Lookbook + product

Solo stylist or two-person team. Full day covers a 100-SKU run with wardrobe swaps; the white floor reads clean every frame.

04 · Editorial

Editorial portraits

Magazine, agency reels, casting tape. The convertible umbrella + fresnel make this room read editorial out of the box.

A portrait session

From light-check to wrap.

A typical 2-hour shoot block — photographer, talent, one assistant — built from the last twelve months of bookings. Your day will read different; the room runs the same.

9:30 AM

Arrival + setup

Front desk meets you at the elevator. Studio door is open, White backdrop is hung, the Nanlite kit is on the floor. Drop bags, plug in laptop, walk the room.

9:45 AM

Light check

Pull the key, set the fill, throw the umbrella. Test a quick frame at the couch and at the backdrop — most setups land in under 15 minutes.

10:00 AM

First set rolling

Talent arrives, lockable door closes, you're shooting. The room is room-in-room sound isolated — quiet enough for direction without raising your voice.

10:45 AM

Backdrop swap / wardrobe

Front desk swaps White to Grey (or Green / Black) for $30. Talent uses the Change Room (Beauty / General) for wardrobe; you re-light during the gap.

11:15 AM

Second set rolling

New backdrop, same kit, second look. Same key + fill works — the LEDs are bi-color, the modifiers absorb whatever color the paper throws.

12:00 PM

Review + selects

Plug a monitor into your laptop, scroll through. Reshoot anything that needs it while the room is still set. The lockable door means you don't need to break down to step out for coffee.

12:30 PM

Wrap + handoff

Reset the room, pack the camera, end-of-day card runs. Receipts email before you're back to the train.

Portrait Studio · FAQ

Quick answers.

What backdrops are available and what's the swap fee?
Four colors: White (hangs as standard, included with every booking), Grey, Green, and Black — $30 each, pre-select at booking or mid-shoot. Black needs 24-hour notice (it lives in storage; front desk hangs it before you arrive). Rolls are 107″ × 12 yd Savage seamless on a wall-mounted Impact Varipole rig.
What lighting is included?
A full Nanlite bi-color LED kit: 2× FS-300B (key + fill), 1× FS-60B (accent), FL-11 fresnel lens. Plus a 36″ Angler softbox with grid, a 45″ Westcott convertible umbrella, 2× C-stands, and a super clamp. Track lighting overhead for ambient. Bring your camera + lens; the rest is on the floor.
Can I bring my own strobes or additional lights?
Yes — eight 110A outlets accommodate a full Profoto, Godox, or Elinchrom rig. The included LEDs work as key for most portraits; add your strobes when you need power for full-length groups, faster sync, or specific modifiers.
Can I bring my own backdrop or shoot on a different surface?
Yes — bring your own seamless paper, fabric, or pop-up backdrop and we'll set it up against the wall rig. Useful if you need a custom color, a specific texture, or a branded color match. The 9′ width gives you room around a single subject.
How early can I load in?
Up to 30 minutes before your booking starts at no charge — enough to drop bags, set up the laptop, and meet talent. Earlier than that, we add the time to the booking at the hourly rate.
What about hair and makeup?
The Makeup Studio (Beauty / General · $40/hr) sits down the hall — lit Hollywood vanity, half-moon desks, monitor, clothing rack, pink daybed. Most portrait shoots pair an hour or two here with the Portrait Studio booking. Or use the Change Room for talent to swap wardrobe between looks.
Is the room sound-isolated?
Yes — room-in-room construction with floated walls and decoupled framing. Quiet enough for video portraits with dialogue (no need for ADR on most shoots). The lockable door keeps the hallway out.
What's the cancellation policy?

The short version: free cancellation up to 24 hrs before. 24–4 hrs out: 50% refund. Inside 4 hrs or no-show: full charge.

If a real same-day issue comes up (illness, client cancel, family), call the front desk — staff handle genuine cases human-to-human, not by the policy.

How do pack hours work?
A pack is a bank of hours, redeemable any weekday in 1-hour increments. Spend them however your week reads — 2 hours Tuesday, 3 hours Thursday, etc. Each redemption is its own booking. The 20-hr Pack is $960 and expires 60 days from purchase.
Is the rate per-room or per-person?
Per-room. Comfortable for a photographer + 2 subjects + an assistant. Larger crews (4+) should book a tour first — it's an intimate portrait room, not a stage.
Can I shoot late or overnight?
Yes — past 8 PM and overnight bookings run at +25% on the hourly rate to cover after-hours staffing. Book in advance; no same-day overnight requests.

Walk the room. See the light.

Portrait Studio is best understood standing in it — the light at the time of day you'd shoot, the floor under your tripod, the rig within reach. Book a 30-minute walkthrough; we'll show you the kit and the backdrops in person.
